At the beginning of July, a survey by the State Environment Agency (CPRH<\/strong>) came out, assessing which beaches on the Pernambuco coast were suitable for swimming.<\/p>\n\n

The result was alarming: of the 27 beaches analyzed, 17 were unfit for bathing<\/strong>. More than half were contaminated by fecal coliforms<\/em>, waste<\/em>, irregular dumping of garbage<\/em> and many other forms of pollution. <\/p>\n\n

We’re hit by this kind of news every year. But it’s no longer a surprise: beaches, rivers and oceans are becoming veritable garbage dumps – the world’s toilet.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n

That’s why we’re asking: Where does ocean waste go? Where does the plastic go? Pernambuco has a significant fishing and shellfishing population <\/strong>The world’s oceans, which depend directly on the seas for their livelihoods and income<\/em>. But how can this be guaranteed amidst a sea of garbage? <\/p>\n\n

To find answers, solutions and reflect on possible ways to recover our beaches, we spoke to Professor Adriana Maria Cunha da Silva<\/strong>. Adriana is a fisheries engineer<\/strong> with a doctorate in geosciences<\/strong> and conducts research into geology, benthic organisms<\/em> and the problem of marine litter and microplastics<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n
