Biomes are the kind of knowledge that the world needs and that Brazil insists on ignoring; it’s not just about the environment, but also economics and development.<\/p>\n\n

Do a quick test: open Google, search for “northeastern hinterland” and look at the first images for twenty seconds. Then change it to “northeastern coastline” and repeat. Where would you choose to spend your vacation? The answer is obvious and that’s exactly where the problem lies. A region of almost 30 million people, the largest populated semi-arid zone in the world, continues to be represented by cracked earth, hungry children and women carrying water cans on their heads. Ask any artificial intelligence provider to generate an image of the hinterland and another of the coast: the result will be the same. Nigerian writer Chimamanda Adichie’s “single story” strategy continues to populate our minds and, of course, this place called the internet. <\/p>\n\n

But today, April 28, National Caatinga Day, Brazil needs to change its lens and take a better look at this place. The Caatinga is not the biome of backwardness, but the biome that Brazil will need to understand when the climate crisis comes knocking on our door. <\/p>\n\n

The Caatinga, in Tupi “white forest” due to the gray color of the trees that lose their leaves in the drought, is the only exclusively Brazilian biome. It covers around 11% of the country and is home to species that are unique in the world. Plants that hibernate during the drought and store water in their roots. Dozens of species of native bees that have co-evolved with the local flora over millennia. A biological heritage that, in the midst of global warming, is precisely the kind of knowledge that the world is desperately seeking and that Brazil insists on ignoring. <\/p>\n\n

This invisibility comes at a cost. In November 2023 Cemaden identified the first arid zone between Bahia and Pernambuco, the first desert area in Brazil. And the impact is not just environmental. Half of the country’s family farming is in the Northeast, according to the latest Agricultural Census. These families are responsible for food production in the region. To degrade the Caatinga is to degrade the food security of an entire people. <\/p>\n\n

But there are other stories to tell. One of them begins with the rain. <\/p>\n\n

At the beginning of the 2000s, the Articula\u00e7\u00e3o do Semi\u00e1rido Brasileiro (ASA) proposed something simple and revolutionary: collecting rainwater from the roofs of houses in rural areas and storing it in cisterns. There was no magic, it was a bricklayer from Sergipe who, when he migrated to S\u00e3o Paulo to build swimming pools, decided to make round cisterns that were simpler. This knowledge was tested, systematized and scaled up. The federal government, under pressure from civil society, turned the One Million Cisterns Program into public policy. Today, more than 1.3 million cisterns have been built, bringing drinking water to more than 5 million people on an ongoing basis. It is one of the largest dryland climate adaptation programs in the world. <\/p>\n\n

For decades, the semi-arid region has been treated as a problem region. What the sertanejo communities have built, with little effort and in adverse conditions, proves that it is a solution region in times of climate crisis. An opportunity to get to know it better is through Caatinga Climate Week<\/a>, where the protagonists are those who live and produce in the semi-arid region, not those who just talk about it. <\/p>\n\n

Restoring 1 million hectares of Caatinga would generate almost 466,000 jobs and produce more than 7 million tons of food, with a financial return of almost double the investment, according to the Instituto Escolha. It’s not just about the environment, it’s about the economy and development. <\/p>\n\n

The Caatinga has accumulated centuries of experience with what the climate crisis is now imposing on the entire planet: heat, drought and water irregularity. According to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), 40% of the planet’s land is already considered dry, putting billions of people at risk of water scarcity in the coming decades. Who would be better prepared to face this future than the people who have been cultivating life, culture and food in these regions for centuries? <\/p>\n\n

The Caatinga has responded to drought for centuries. Now it needs to respond to invisibility. <\/p>\n\n
