Entitled “A Being So Strong: Resistance and Resilience of Family Farming in the Face of the Climate Crisis”, this exhibition, organized by the Sabiá Agroecological Development Centre, an NGO that for 30 years has been promoting and building fairer food systems in Pernambuco, sheds light on the challenge and resilience of family farming in the semi-arid region in the face of climate adversity. Through 20 striking photographs, we capture the essence of rural life which, although deeply affected by climate change, persists and innovates, adapting to new climatic regimes. Each image tells the story of farming families who, anchored in agro-ecological practices and traditional knowledge, face and overcome bad weather.

The exhibition is an immersion in the landscapes of the countryside from Agreste to Sertão, territories of the Pernambuco Semi-Arid extremely affected by the climate crisis and at risk of desertification. This same hinterland, which is unfairly suffering the effects of a crisis it did not contribute to, can also teach us how to live with it, because historically it is a region of high temperatures and little rainfall, where its population has learned to live with the semi-arid region and its specificities. Where adversity is confronted with ancestral wisdom and sustainable solutions.

“Um Ser-Tão Forte” celebrates not only the beauty and fortitude of the rural sertanejo, once seen as poor, ugly, with people who suffer and always need help. We invite you to strip away this preconception and change the lenses of your glasses to embark with us on this journey through the art of photography that reveals the vital role of family farming in building a more resilient and sustainable future with real food on the tables of people in the countryside and in the city. Join us on this visual journey, full of stories of resistance, adaptation and, above all, hope.
