Why so much plastic? | Real Food

João Lucas França – Broadcaster and communicator for the Sabiá Center.

Comida de Verdade is here to discuss: “Why so much plastic?” Brazil is the 4th country in the world that generates the most plastic waste, according to research by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in 2019. There are 11.3 million tons, of which only 1.28% is actually recycled.

Brazil’s almost 5,600 municipalities generate 3.44 million tons of plastic every year. And internal research by the Association of Public Cleaning Companies shows that you, me and every person in Brazil generated 64 kilos of plastic waste in 2022.

What do we mean by so many numbers? That we need to change our consumption habits. In order to tackle the way in which large companies produce waste in an inconsequential way, we need to change locally.

That’s why, since 2023, the Sabiá Center and the Agroecological Spaces Network have been campaigning for agroecological fairs and conscious consumption. It’s the “My Fair, My Bag, Our Planet!” campaign.

A change in our consumption and use of bags in the city can change a lot, you know? And that’s why we’re going to talk about this campaign! And it’s about these changes that we talk to Camila Petroni! An urban farmer with a productive backyard. She works with herbal medicine and takes part in the Setúbal, Santo Amaro and Várzea Agroecological Fairs.

Comida de Verdade is your Saturday program to talk about food and agroecology, valuing our markets and local culture. Every Saturday at 10 . 30am on Rádio Universitária 99.9 FM and rebroadcast on Rádio Universitária Paulo Freire 820 AM – Podcast format on Spotify from the Sabiá Center!
