Recife hosts 2nd National Meeting on Urban Agriculture

From July 30 to August 2, 2025, Recife (PE) will host the 2nd National Urban Agriculture Meeting (ENAU), which will take place 10 years after the first edition of the event, held in Rio de Janeiro in 2015. With the theme “Cities that plant! Urban agriculture in the fight against hunger and for climate justice”, the meeting will bring together more than 200 participants from all over the country to strengthen networks, articulate the movement and exchange knowledge on public policies, agroecology, food sovereignty and climate justice.

Organized by the National Urban Agriculture Collective (CNAU), the 2nd ENAU is a collective construction that seeks to value the diverse experiences of urban, peri-urban and traditional farmers, bringing together representatives from all regions of Brazil in a space for dialogue, training and celebration.

The program will include thematic seminars, conversation circles, workshops, exchanges to learn about local experiences, cultural presentations and an agroecological fair with products from different urban territories. Among the themes highlighted are the implementation of the National Urban and Peri-urban Agriculture Policy (Law No. 14.935), the fight for climate justice, the fight against hunger and food security and the strengthening of local and national urban agriculture networks.

The meeting culminates on Saturday 2nd, in Praça da Várzea, with activities open to the public. From 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., the square will host the Flavors and Knowledge Fair, with urban agriculture exhibitors from various Brazilian states. In parallel with the fair, in the morning there will be the final plenary session of the event with the reading of the political letter of the II ENAU and in the afternoon there will be a public act, seed and seedling exchange activities and a cultural program.

The event is being held in partnership with the Urban and Peri-urban Agriculture Articulation of the Metropolitan Region of Recife (AUP RMR), which brings together initiatives such as community gardens, productive backyards, composting collectives, solidarity kitchens, agroecological occupations and projects, NGOs, municipal and state public bodies. The city was chosen to host the meeting precisely because of the large number of existing experiences and the strong links between urban agriculture in the region.

The 2nd ENAU is supported by the National Urban Agriculture Program, the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Family Agriculture (MDA), the Ministry of Development and Social Assistance, Family and Fight against Hunger (MDS), the Executive Secretariat for Urban Agriculture and the Secretariat for Special Projects of the Recife City Council, Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE), Federal Rural University of Pernambuco (UFRPE), Fiocruz Pernambuco, University of Brasília (UnB), UnB Rural Extension and Agroecology Project, The Pollination Project, Ecumenical Service Coordination (Cese), Brazil-Germany Cultural Center of Recife (CCBA) and Incubacoop.
