Last Thursday, March 10, about 30 women participated in the organization and cleaning effort. The activity lasted all day at Horta Popular Agroecológica Dandara , during the morning, after a snack, they organized themselves into work groups to clean and weed the new area, requalify flowerbeds, among other daily demands of the garden. The action was carried out by Centro Sabiá, the World March of Women. Aniérica Almeida, Urban Agriculture advisor at Centro Sabiá, highlights the importance of women in organizing themselves in initiatives such as these that aim to tackle hunger on the outskirts of large cities.

After a collective lunch, as a celebration of the women’s struggle in March, the women farmers gathered in a round of dialogue for the end of hunger and sovereignty, facilitated by the State Councilor for Food and Nutrition Security, Marta Almeida , who highlighted the importance of popular women in appropriating ancestral foods, real food, which we plant, harvest and make. “We are going through a very cruel process and we are not realizing it. They appropriated our food and recipes and today we are sick, obese, hypertensive, with diabetes, because now we are hostage to powdered milk, sausages, canned goods, dyes and sugar, a consequence of the process of loss of our food sovereignty” , highlighted Marta in her speech.

THE Horta Popular Agroecológica Dandara was created in August 2020 during the pandemic in Peixinhos, a peripheral neighborhood in the north of Recife, through the initiatives of Solidarity Hands Campaign , was implemented with the aim of producing poison-free food and medicinal plants so that families in the community can reduce the impacts of social inequality, especially food insecurity, generated by the COVID-19 pandemic, in the country where 19 million people go hungry.
