Indigenous Peoples and Hunger: Until When? | Real Food Program

The National Day of Struggle of Indigenous Peoples, April 19, is a necessary date for many indigenous agendas to be brought to the public. In this year 2023, original peoples from all over the country continue to fight against hunger, food insecurity and the innumerable food crises!

Throughout the Bolsonaro administration, relying on the Covid-19 pandemic, indigenous peoples suffered to circumvent the disease, the deaths, and the inevitable famine that struck them. And it wasn’t “only” hunger; The lack of public policies and indigenous advocacy during the Bolsonaro era endangered the lives of thousands of indigenous people, causing the death of many. The survey by the National Indigenous Life and Memory Committee showed that there were 162 affected peoples, 13,801 contaminated, and 493 deaths by June 2020.

Since then, the situation has remained heavy. Hunger strikes, it kills, and the indigenous peoples lose space, and their lives. Until when? Until when will Brazilian indigenous peoples have to face hunger, lack of public policies, lawlessness?
