The ozone layer and coexistence with climates | Cantos do Sabiá
João Lucas França – Broadcaster and communicator for the Sabiá Center.

September 16 is the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, a date to raise awareness, a real climate “wake-up call”, and perhaps even a pointer to the possibility of a way out of the climate crisis.
It was on this date in 1987 that several countries signed the Montreal Protocol, a treaty to protect the ozone layer, an agreement to reduce the production of everything that weakened and destroyed our protective layer. With everything toxic being produced, the forecast was for the Earth to warm by more than 2.5°C in a short space of time, as well as a huge increase in skin diseases, such as cancer, and eye problems.
The treaty was a success. It was enough to change the logic of production in the world, bringing more responsibility. Today, we are facing new climate challenges – and of course, protecting the ozone layer remains one of them.
But what do we have to do with it? What are these challenges? And, after all, what is this ozone layer and why do we need to defend it? That’s all we’re going to talk about here on our show!
