Who’s hungry in Recife? | Real Food
João Lucas França – Broadcaster and communicator for the Sabiá Center.
On today’s show, we’re going to discuss: Who’s hungry in Recife? In the last municipal elections, hunger featured prominently in the debates. One important piece of information was that 150,000 people in Recife live with hunger. Let’s go further: in the capital of Pernambuco, more than 71,000 families don’t have decent housing and 500,000 live below the poverty line.
A survey by the PENSSAN Network (2021-22) showed that 2.1 million people face moderate or severe food insecurity in Pernambuco. These figures are frightening, but… what about the people? After all, who is hungry in Recife?
That’s what we talked about with Solô Paiva, a sociologist and specialist in health promotion and surveillance, environment and work. She is part of the team at the Northeastern Center for Popular Medicine, representing the CNMT in the Articulation of Urban and Peri-urban Agriculture in the Metropolitan Region of Recife.
