A vote for them | Cantos do Sabiá
João Lucas França – Radio host and communicator for the Sabiá Center.
Cantos do Sabiá is raising its voice to reflect the conquest of the women’s vote in Brazil! February 21st is an important milestone. A date of struggle, celebrating the conquest of women’s suffrage throughout the country.
The journey of women in search of this right goes back many years, well before 1891, when there were already uprisings to include the vote for women as a guaranteed right.
But it wasn’t until 1932 that the vote was actually granted, more than forty years after the first uprising for this right – and after several struggles by so many women. The fight for equality at the ballot box gained momentum and spread thanks to the advance of social movements; thanks to popular struggle, organized struggle and feminism.
It’s not just the vote that guarantees access. It’s not just about being able to vote, it’s about who you can vote for. Are women represented in the elections? Does the women’s vote guarantee equality?
It’s about this representation, and the importance of their vote, of women, for democracy, for political representation, for participation! A vote for them. To talk about this very important issue, we invited researcher and sociologist Carmen Silva to Cantos do Sabiá ! Carmen is a feminist and educator at SOS Corpo – Feminist Institute for Democracy.
Cantos do Sabiá is the Centro Sabiá’s Podcast! Weekly we discuss agroecology, sustainability and politics in the countryside and in the city! The podcast goes live every Monday, with the complete interview edition that originally made up the Center’s radio program. https://spoti.fi/31VtUj5
