MARIAS School: What does the city grow? | Real Food
João Lucas França – Radio host and communicator for the Sabiá Center.
Comida de Verdade will air this Saturday to talk about food, agroecology and, why not, food production right in the middle of the city! Is it possible to grow food in the city? And what does the city grow?
The Metropolitan Region of Recife is hosting the first School of Urban and Peri-urban Agriculture! It’s the MARIAS School : Women and Urban Farmers in the Metropolitan Region of Recife (RMR).
The Marias School is an initiative of the Sabiá Center, together with the Center for Agroecology and Peasantry at UFRPE, and also with the Movement of Homeless Workers (MTST), and is supported by the National Urban Agriculture Program. The action comes from a parliamentary amendment by Federal Deputy Túlio Gadelha.
This action for education, right in an urban center as large and as unequal as Recife, is a very important milestone; it is the Metropolitan Region receiving education about food production, planting, harvesting… about taking care of this thing that is so essential, and so neglected, our land. The MARIAS school is access in the periphery, to change Recife.
But what about the city? Plant what? Simone Arimatéia, technical advisor at the Sabiá Center, talks about all this with us. Agroecologist, Technical Advisor in Urban Agriculture for Centro Sabiá. PMDPro certified.
Comida de Verdade is your Saturday program to talk about food and agroecology, valuing our markets and local culture. Every Saturday at 10 . 30am on Rádio Universitária 99.9 FM and rebroadcast on Rádio Universitária Paulo Freire 820 AM – Podcast format on Spotify of the Sabiá Center, every Wednesday!
