Overcoming hunger in Brazil | Cantos do Sabiá
João Lucas França – Broadcaster and communicator for the Sabiá Center.
Today we ‘ re talking about hunger in Brazil. For years, we’ve been talking about hunger data here. And in the last 10 years, Brazil has gone from heaven to hell when it comes to tackling food and nutritional insecurity.
In 2014, still under the Dilma government, Brazil had historically beaten hunger by getting off the world hunger map, only to see it return to rock bottom seven years later.
In 2022, more than 125 million lived with some level of food insecurity in the country. Of these, 33.1 million were severely food insecure.
Today, we are experiencing a new moment in the fight against hunger, when finally, 10 years later, hunger is starting to decrease in the country. Are we overcoming hunger in Brazil? How can we fight hunger without feeding on poison, pesticides, with food sovereignty?
And it’s to talk about this that we’ve invited Fernanda Tavares – Nutritionist, Master’s and PhD in Nutrition (UFPE) – to our virtual table. She is currently a professor at the Public Health Nutrition Laboratory in the UFPE Nutrition Department.
Cantos do Sabiá is the Sabiá Center Podcast! Every week we discuss agroecology, sustainability and politics in the countryside and the city! The podcast goes live every Monday, with the complete interview edition that originally made up the Center’s radio program. https://spoti.fi/31VtUj5
