Why farm towns? | Real Food

João Lucas França – Broadcaster and communicator for the Sabiá Center.

On today’s show, our question is: Why farm cities? In our program we talk a lot about agroecology, urban and peri-urban agriculture. But many of these spaces already exist, resist and are in place in the city.

The question remains: in cities as populous as Recife, is it possible to plant? How can agroecology and agriculture flourish in the middle of the city? And, for that matter, what’s the point of agricultural cities?

Thinking about planting in the city is more than thinking about gardens, parks and fairs; it is often resistance. It’s a struggle for land, for square meters, which are increasingly expensive, less accessible and less green. Our fight is against the weather, against extreme climate, against green destruction.
Our fight is for the earth and the peoples of the earth.

Shall we talk? Thamiris Santos – mother of 9, farmer – is chatting with us on our podcast. She is a member of the MTST Pernambuco, coordinator of the 8 de Março occupation and a member of the AUP – Articulation of Urban and Peri-urban Agriculture and Agroecology in Recife.
