The workshop, aimed at women, was attended by about ten women farmers from the municipality’s rural areas. These women are leaders and members of associations in their communities, such as the Association of Rural Producers of Sítio Serrote dos Bois, the Association of Women Farmers and Rural Producers of Caruaru—AMARPC (Vila do Rafael), and the Association of Women in Family Farming of Sítio Reinado and Surrounding Areas—AMAR.
The workshop, which lasted eight hours, aimed to strengthen young women farmers’ self-esteem, leadership skills, and communication tools by linking issues of gender and climate justice to their realities in the Semi-Arid Region.
For Juciara Lima, president of AMARPC, the initiative was very important for women who still face water challenges in the driest regions. “Here we see how important it is to empower ourselves, work together, and communicate our problems more effectively. The weather is no longer the same; it rains less and less, and when it does rain, it’s very little, and we women in the Semi-Arid region are the hardest hit. That’s why we’re here—to learn how to communicate better and come up with a campaign that will help us face these changes,” explained Juciara.
Yara Maria de Jesus, a resident of Sítio Reinado, a farmer, and president of AMAR, highlighted the need to give women farmers greater visibility: “We are the ones who take care of the Caatinga, the backyards, and the livestock; we are the ones who fight for water, and we want to show that despite all the difficulties, we want to produce more—but we need resources and public assistance.”
The initiative is organized by the Sabiá Center with support from UN Women in the Pernambuco Semi-Arid Region.
Nothing found.
