On today’s program, we’re heading out onto the streets to hear a cry that has been echoing through the streets of Recife and all across Brazil for more than 30 years: it’s the Cry of the Excluded. We ask: What is there to cry out about?

On September 7, while Brazil commemorates the Cry of Independence, military parades, and military aircraft displays, thousands of people also take to the streets to give a voice to those who are often not heard.

It is the Cry of the Excluded, which will mark its 32nd edition in 2026. A collective effort to raise our voices and articulate the demands of all of us. A process that stems from grassroots struggles and brings to the streets the grievances, hopes, and demands of those fighting for their rights.

And there’s one question that cuts across all of this: in an election year, when we’ll also be deciding the country’s future, what do we need to shout about?

Today, we’re going to talk about the 32nd Cry of the Excluded, looking at Brazil, but also at our own region. That’s what we’ll be discussing with Enildo Luiz Gouveia—a professor with a Ph.D. in Geography. He teaches at IFPE/Recife. He’s part of the coordinating team for the Dom Helder Câmara Forum, which organizes the Cry of the Excluded in Recife!
