The Racism of Hunger? | Real Food Program
João Lucas França – Radio host and communicator for the Sabiá Center.
The program Comida de Verdade comes to talk about food, hunger, and racism. After all, does racism make you hungry? In a country that despite being miscegenated is also extremely racist in its structures, the context of hunger already invades the homes of thousands of Brazilians. We are more than 33 million people on the hunger map! According to the 2019 National Sample Survey of Households (PNAD), the poverty rate was higher among Brazilians self-declared black and mixed race – 66.1% – compared to the white population, 37.8%..
Poverty, inequality, and lack of access are determinants of adequate, safe, healthy food. So, thinking about our history as a colonized country, with interrupted freedom, with the enslavement of indigenous and black people, does all this racism make us hungry?
That’s what we talked about with Myrella Santana! Myrella is a political scientist from UFPE and a post-graduate student in public management and social sustainability. She is a member of the Black Women’s Network of Pernambuco and of the Black Articulation of Pernambuco.
