Where Fire Catches, Death Stays
Setting fires is not the solution!
Fires continue to be a problem for Brazil. Used as an agricultural technique for a long time, burning destroys the soil, harms fauna and flora, and puts many people’s lives at risk.
In 2022, the total area burned in Brazil was 16.3 million hectares, in all biomes. To give you an idea, we’re talking about an area 10,000 times the size of São Paulo, the country’s largest city. The area of forests burned increased by 93% compared to 2021.
By July this year, 3 million hectares of burnt areas had been monitored. This is still a worrying figure, considering that most of the burned area is native vegetation. The information comes from the “Fire Monitor”, an initiative of MapBiomas and IPAM (Amazon Environmental Research Institute).
The advancement of agricultural knowledge and the recovery of ancestral techniques through agroecology has proven that there are many ways to “clean” and prepare the soil for planting, but setting fire to it is not one of them.
The second phase of the anti-fire campaign , “Where fire catches, death remains”, reminds us that fire doesn’t just catch the earth, it can leave a trail of destruction in its wake! Setting fires is not the solution!
