Urban forest? – Real Food

João Lucas França – Broadcaster and communicator for the Sabiá Center.

Atlantic Forest Day draws attention to one fact: we live in an urban forest! In Greater Recife, the Atlantic Forest still survives among rivers, hills, mangroves, squares, parks and green fragments scattered throughout the city.

At the same time, discussion is growing about urban forests: green areas that help reduce heat, reduce flooding, improve the air and guarantee quality of life in cities.

But how can we protect the Atlantic Forest in cities? How can we live with the forest without destroying it? And what is the role of the population, public authorities and agroecology in building greener and less hot cities?

That’s what we’re talking about now with Ednilza Maranhão, who has a master’s degree in Animal Biology and a post-doctorate in Ethnobiology and Nature Conservation. She is an associate professor at UFRPE and has experience in teaching environmental education, the Atlantic Forest and the Caatinga in northeastern Brazil.
