Our forest is the Caatinga! | Cantos do Sabiá
João Lucas França – Radio host and communicator for the Sabiá Center.
Today’s Cantos do Sabiá is dedicated to the symbol of Northeastern pride and resistance – our white forest, the world’s only biome – the Caatinga!
April is the month dedicated to the Caatinga, a whole month to draw attention to this, the symbol of resistance, but also the victim of extreme climate change. Deforestation and desertification are increasingly present; the environment and the people of the Caatinga suffer? Brazil is bleeding.
According to data from MapBiomas, the Caatinga has already lost more than 26% of its area since 1985, and desertification is already a reality. A study recently released by the Federal University of Alagoas (UFAL) and the National Institute for Space Research (INPE) recorded an arid climate region in Brazil for the first time.
Where there is vegetation, there is water, and where there is water, there is life! Our fight now is against time. Today we spoke to agronomist and technical advisor to the Sabiá Center – Riva Almeida – to talk about this confrontation and the struggles of the people of the Sertão. Riva is an agronomist, a specialist in education, conservation and management of natural resources in the northeastern semi-arid region, and the technical team of the Sabiá Center in the Sertão.
Cantos do Sabiá is the Centro Sabiá’s Podcast! Weekly we discuss agroecology, sustainability and politics in the countryside and in the city! The podcast goes live every Monday, with the complete interview edition that originally made up the Center’s radio program. https://spoti.fi/31VtUj5
