Brazil: record holders in poison | Cantos do Sabiá
João Lucas França – Broadcaster and communicator for the Sabiá Center.

In 2024, Brazil set a new record for poison releases. There were 663 new pesticides released for use on Brazilian soil, 20% more than the previous year. Many of these poisons already exist in the country, but have been given a new formulation – they are generics.
The record comes as no surprise. Last year, Bill 1.459, known as the Poison Bill, was approved by the Senate and sanctioned by President Lula. Despite the president’s vetoes, the Poison Bill is as dangerous as the pesticide itself.
The bill reduces the powers of inspection bodies and makes it more flexible to register mutagenic, carcinogenic and teratogenic pesticides in our country. We are the record holders for poison. What’s the prize?
This week’s Cantos do Sabiá talks to the executive secretary of the Permanent Campaign Against Pesticides and For Life, Jakeline Pivato – who is part of the campaign’s national coordination.

Cantos do Sabiá is the Sabiá Center Podcast! Every week we discuss agroecology, sustainability and politics in the countryside and the city! The podcast goes live every Monday, with the complete interview edition that originally made up the Center’s radio program. https://spoti.fi/31VtUj5
