Located in the Zona da Mata Sul region of Pernambuco, the Rio Formoso Agroecological Market celebrates its 19th anniversary this Tuesday, August 18. Over the course of nearly two decades, the initiative has helped strengthen the production and marketing of family farming in the region, bring farmers and consumers closer together, and build relationships of trust between producers and consumers.
For the past 19 years, the market has sold food produced using agroecological methods, respecting nature’s cycles and valuing the work of farming families, many of whom are settlers from the agrarian reform program.
According to Aniérica Almeida, territorial coordinator of the Sabiá Center, the market has been establishing itself as a public food supply facility for the municipality of Rio Formoso, playing a strategic role in promoting and strengthening agroecology and food and nutritional security. “The market ensures access to healthy, pesticide-free food, while also generating income and helping to improve the quality of life for rural women and men,” says Aniérica.
To celebrate this journey, the program will feature tributes, music, and the unveiling of new initiatives.
